House Concurrent Resolution 141

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY DEBATE TEAM FOR WINNING THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN HONORS PROGRAMS DEBATE TOURNAMENT.

WHEREAS, the Alcorn State University Debate Team won the National Association of African-American Honors Programs Debate Tournament at Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland; and

WHEREAS, the National Association of African-American Honors Programs is a consortium of programs at historically black colleges and universities where students who comprise the group are among some of the most academically talented in the nation; and

WHEREAS, the Alcorn State Debate Team members who participated in the tournament are April Smith, Aimee Jackson and LaKeisha Costley and their advisor is Dr. Thomas Bolden; and

WHEREAS, the Alcorn State team defeated Hampton University and Morehouse College in the first two rounds of competition, leading them to the final competition where they defeated Bethune Cookman College; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature finds it most appropriate to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young people of this state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Alcorn State Debate Team for winning the National Association of African-American Honors Programs Debate Tournament and extend our heartiest wishes for success in all their future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Alcorn State University, Dr. Thomas Bolden, April Smith, Aimee Jackson, LaKeisha Costley and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
